Clark Atlanta University Launches New Data Science Major

Clark Atlanta University introduced a new data science major this fall, combining coursework in statistics and computer science with domain-specific electives in health analytics and business analytics rather than treating data science as a purely technical discipline.

The major was developed with input from Atlanta-area employers who told the university they needed graduates capable of applying data analysis to specific industry problems, not just technical skills in isolation. Students choose a concentration track in either health analytics or business analytics during their junior year, pairing core data science coursework with electives from the university's public health or business programs.

"A data scientist who only understands the math but not the industry they're working in is only half as useful to an employer," said Clark Atlanta's Chair of Mathematics and Computer Science. "We built concentration tracks specifically so students graduate fluent in both the technical skills and the domain they want to apply them to."

The program enrolled 60 students in its first cohort, exceeding initial enrollment projections. University officials say strong early interest has been driven partly by growing awareness of data science career paths among students who might previously have defaulted to more traditional computer science degrees.

Clark Atlanta says it plans to add a third concentration track focused on public policy analytics within the next two years, pending additional faculty hiring.
