Georgia Hospitals Report Progress on Nursing Shortage Amid New Training Pipelines

Georgia hospital systems say new partnerships with nursing schools across the state are beginning to ease staffing vacancies, according to figures released this week by the Georgia Hospital Association, though officials caution that the broader nursing shortage remains far from resolved.

The partnerships, which pair hospitals directly with nursing programs at Georgia State, Augusta University, and several technical colleges, guarantee clinical placement slots and often include tuition assistance in exchange for a post-graduation work commitment at the sponsoring hospital. Association data shows statewide registered nurse vacancy rates have ticked down modestly over the past year after climbing steadily since the pandemic.

"We're not declaring victory, because vacancy rates are still well above where they were a decade ago," said a senior official with the Georgia Hospital Association. "But for the first time in years, the trend line is moving in the right direction instead of getting worse."

Hospitals involved in the partnerships say the tuition assistance model has proven particularly effective at retaining nurses in the region, since graduates who accept the funding are contractually obligated to work in Georgia for a set period after graduation, often three to four years.

The association says it will continue tracking vacancy data quarterly and expects several additional hospital-nursing school partnerships to be announced later this year as the model expands statewide.
