Mercer University Expands Global Study Abroad Network

Mercer University added five new international partner campuses to its study abroad network this year, expanding a program the Macon-based school has used for decades to distinguish itself from other private Georgia universities.

The newly added partnerships, located across Europe and Asia, offer exchange terms ranging from a single semester to a full academic year, giving students flexibility in how they incorporate international study into their degree timeline. Mercer says the expansion reflects growing student demand for study abroad options beyond its traditional European partner institutions.

"Study abroad used to mean picking from three or four schools in Western Europe," said Mercer's Vice President for Global Initiatives. "Students today want more options, and they want programs that connect directly to their specific major, whether that's engineering, business, or public health."

University data shows roughly one in five Mercer undergraduates participates in some form of international study before graduating, a rate the school says is among the highest of any comprehensive university in the Southeast. Officials credit the program with helping Mercer maintain strong enrollment even as many small private universities nationally have faced steep declines.

Mercer says it plans to add scholarship funding specifically earmarked for the new partner campuses next year, aiming to reduce cost as a barrier for students who want to study internationally.
